16 days of Activism

16 days of Activism

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an annual international campaign that kicks off on November 25 (International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) and concludes on December 10 (Human Rights Day). In Madagascar, this period is marked by a vibrant blend of official state advocacy and grassroots community mobilization, often unified by the global theme of "Orange the World" . The Malagasy government, through the Ministry of Population, frequently launches the campaign with large-scale "caravans" or public marches in major cities like Antananarivo, involving NGOs, UN agencies like UNFPA, and local youth networks.

The "Orange the World" Symbolism

The color orange is ubiquitous during these 16 days. It is used to:

  • Illuminate Landmarks: Historic buildings in the capital may be lit in orange.

  • Solidarity Clothing: Participants wear orange lambas (traditional wraps) or t-shirts during marches.

  • Digital Presence: Social media campaigns use hashtags like #16Days and #EndGBV to reach the tech-savvy Malagasy youth.
