Early this month, one of the strongest storms of the season — Cyclone Gezani — struck the island nation of Madagascar, leaving behind a trail of destruction, loss, and urgent human need. The cyclone made landfall on February 10th on the country’s east coast, and its impacts continue to be felt across large parts of the island and beyond.

A Powerful Storm With Devastating Impact

At its peak, the storm produced sustained winds of around 185 km/h (115 mph), with gusts up to nearly 270 km/h, powerful enough to uproot trees, tear off roofs, and flatten buildings.

The port city of Toamasina, Madagascar’s second-largest urban centre, bore the brunt of the cyclone’s force, suffering severe structural damage, destruction of homes, and widespread loss of services like electricity and water supplies.

Scale of the Human Toll

As of the latest updates:

• At least 59 people have died as a result of the cyclone’s passage, according to Madagascar’s National Office for Risk and Disaster Management (BNGRC).

• 804 people have been injured, with 15 still reported missing.

• More than 16,000 people have been displaced from their homes, forced into emergency shelters or temporary camps.

• An estimated 423,000 people overall have been affected by the disaster, spanning at least 25 districts across eastern and central Madagascar.

The cyclone destroyed tens of thousands of homes and damaged many more, leaving entire communities struggling to recover.
